Integrating traditional Hawaiian healing with primary care

Rooted in Hawaiʻi’s rich history, traditional Hawaiian healing methods are used to restore balance and support holistic health. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawaiʻi collaborates with Waimānalo Health Center, a local Federally Qualified Health Center, to offer traditional healing to members as a value-added service. Waimānalo Health Center takes an integrated approach by pairing traditional healing practices with primary care.

The program started with a 24-month pilot program, during which participants experienced a 51% reduction in emergency department visits, a 29% decrease in per-member-per-month costs and a 74% reduction in inpatient care costs. The health plan measured outcomes like blood pressure and A1C levels in addition to holistic measures like patients’ self-reported pain level.
