In the United States, more than 60 million people, roughly one-fifth of the population, reside in rural areas where health care access is limited.1 People who live in rural areas travel more than twice the distance as urban residents to access care.2 Factors like travel barriers can cause some rural residents to delay receiving health care, resulting in worsened health outcomes.3 Recognizing these barriers, UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid sponsored the 9th Annual Remote Area Medical® (RAM) event, hosted by NyE Communities Coalition (NyECC).
Supporting health access in rural Nevada
NyECC’s mission is to improve health and well-being across Nevada's rural Nye, Esmeralda and Lincoln Counties.4
Through programs spanning workforce development, prevention and wellness, community building and transportation, NyECC works with individuals, organizations and agencies to increase services and opportunities for residents. For this year’s RAM event in Pahrump, Nevada, UnitedHealthcare Health Plan of Nevada Medicaid’s support enabled NyECC to provide essential health care access to residents who might otherwise go without.
Held on October 4 and 5, 2024, the event provided comprehensive health services to over 300 patients, who collectively received nearly 500 medical, dental and vision services. For many, this event served as their only viable option for health care: 64% of attendees did not have dental insurance, 45% lacked health insurance and 25% had been without dental or vision care for over five years. Additionally, 25% of attendees were retired or disabled, and 30% were unemployed, resulting in a significant need for accessible care within this popultion.
