Improving the health and wellbeing of Virginians through provider and community partnerships
By partnering with community-based organizations that address social and economic factors, we work to meet member needs. This includes collaboration with local partners, health care, public housing agencies and others.
Making health care simple, affordable and easy to access
We work to ensure our members have access to a high quality, affordable health care system. By expanding efficient and effective care close to home, we improve health outcomes.
Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity for UnitedHealthcare Community Plan to put our core values into action. In addition to meeting the needs of our members through increased engagement, we worked with providers and communities to identify and support their needs. Some initiatives include donating and distributing:
- Over $33,000 to support food banks, shelters, clinics and resource centers
- Blankets to homeless shelters and senior agencies in every region of the state
- More than 8,000 masks to senior nursing homes and adult daycares, community service boards, free clinics, FQHC clinics, schools and Tidewater local homeless shelters
- Food, funding and school supplies for local schools in Roanoke, Central and Tidewater
- 4,000 hand sanitizers to community-based organizations, providers and local schools
- Home-delivered meal kits to 100+ of our neediest DSNP members
- Food, funding, volunteer support and healthcare education for community foodbanks, churches, Boys & Girls Clubs and local shelters as part of our Food Distribution Initiative
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), food, tents and funding support for local COVID testing sites in the Northern Virginia region
- Health education support to free clinics in Roanoke and Northern Virginia
- Employee volunteer efforts for local school feeding programs throughout the state
- Toiletries and household items to senior centers, women’s crisis centers and local homeless shelters in various regions across the state
- Crafts for senior centers in Northern Virginia
- Lunches to front line staff at various provider offices in every region of the state as part of our Food Distribution Initiative
- A Negative Air Filtration System for Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems to be used with isolation room patients who test positive for COVID-19
- PPE to Virginia Association of Free and Charitable Clinics for COVID-19 testing sites
Breaking barriers in health inequities
We are committed to reducing health disparities and building healthier communities by supporting programs that improve access to care and address the social determinants of health. We are helping to deliver care that is responsive to the needs of each member and removing barriers.
Providing Medicaid coverage
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia provides Medicaid coverage to various individuals with our programs. We serve the following populations:
- Children: Children from birth to age 19 access a part of the nationwide Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This provides coverage for financially eligible uninsured children including primary and dental care, behavioral health services and vaccinations.
- Expansion adults: Adults between the ages of 19 – 64 who earn up to 138% of the federal poverty level have received Medicaid in Virginia since 2019 through Medicaid Expansion.
- Individuals with disabilities: These individuals include those with physical or intellectual disabilities. Individuals with severe behavioral disorders or mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are also included.
- Other adults: This includes individuals who qualify in other ways such as those who received Medicaid as a child while in foster care.
- Older adults: Those over age 65 who meet income requirements or qualify because of a disability are also covered.
- Pregnant women: Women who are pregnant and meet certain income limits are eligible for Medicaid and other programs that provide coverage during pregnancy and the 60-days following pregnancy.

We focus on programs and practices that deliver proactive, integrated care that addresses not just health conditions, but also the social and environmental factors related to an individual's well-being.
Health equity accreditation
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia was awarded the Health Equity Accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for meeting or exceeding rigorous requirements for health equity. NCQA is the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a private, nonprofit organization that Accredits and Certifies a wide range of health care organizations. Read more about this award.
