Dedicated to improving health outcomes in Virginia, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia offers the One Pass program as a hybrid solution to provide physical activity opportunities that are both flexible and digitally connected. An Optum benefit, One Pass is the largest national fitness network serving Medicaid beneficiaries in the industry. The program’s mission is to make fitness flexible and engaging for everyone. One Pass helps individuals reach their whole person health goals while having fun and discovering new passions along the way.
Consistent physical activity has been shown to improve brain health, strengthen bones and reduce the risk of depression, anxiety, obesity and cardiovascular disease.1 These health concerns are prevalent among Virginians, with a 2023 KFF survey revealing that 32% of Virginians reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, and America’s Health Rankings showing an obesity rate of 35.2% in 2022.2,3
Traditional methods to improve health through gym memberships face challenges, with 50% of new gym members canceling their memberships within the first six months due to costs, scheduling conflicts, transportation issues and social anxiety.4 To address these barriers, digital workouts offer an appealing alternative, enabling physical activity without the need for gym visits. A recent study from the National Library of Medicine found that participants using online workouts experienced mental health benefits, added daily structure, increased virtual social connection and reduced feelings of isolation.5 Home-based exercises and digital health interventions have also been shown to improve physical function in older adults, reducing falls and enhancing quality of life.6
The One Pass program offers unlimited access to multiple network locations each month, flexibility to change locations anytime and the ability to bring caregivers free of charge. Members can access digital fitness solutions, including thousands of workout videos and customizable workout builders, through the One Pass website. The site also features a fitness directory and delivery services for groceries and household essentials.
For One Pass members in Petersburg, participating gyms have conducted six healthy cooking demonstrations via webcast, showcasing nutritious meal preparations by chefs. Petersburg, a low-income city with a crime rate of 33.84 per 100 residents, is the focus of the Partnership for Petersburg initiative launched by Governor Glenn Youngkin.7,8 This initiative, supported by state, local, community and faith leaders, aims to transform Petersburg into a better place to live, work and raise a family. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia’s One Pass program supports this initiative by promoting health and wellness in the community.
Tameeka Smith, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia, stated, “We are committed to improving the quality of life for our members. We understand that health extends beyond medical care to include the social drivers that impact overall well-being, such as access to nutritious food and opportunities for physical activity. By addressing these critical factors, we aim to create healthier communities and ensure that our members have the resources they need to thrive.”
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia remains committed to supporting whole-person health, providing not only quality care but investing in resources to encourage healthy lifestyles. By providing flexible gym access and working to reduce barriers to physical activity and nutritious lifestyles, UnitedHealthcare is there for what matters.
