Understanding the trends shaping America’s aging population

On July 11, 2024, we hosted a live webcast featuring ADvancing State Executive Director Martha Roherty and Senior Director of Aging Policy Abby Cox. Their conversation centered around insights into the challenges and opportunities facing America’s aging population.

With the current growth of the U.S. population aged 65 and older increasing at unprecedented rates, this group of Americans face many challenges and opportunities. The number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to increase by 47%, from 58 million in 2022 to 82 million by 2050.

Aging adults are facing a number of challenges including increased obesity rates, living alone, lack of caregivers, increasing Medicare expenditures and federal budget cuts. In this webcast, stereotypes about aging that impact the health care experience were discussed. Webcast speakers additionally talked about how aging relates to chronic disease, physical disability and intellectual and developmental disabilities.
