In Arizona, about 240,000 people care for a family member who has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, and the need for support is growing faster here than anywhere else in the county.¹ Caregivers of people living with dementia are more likely to experience depression, anxiety and social isolation.

Since 2023, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona has invested nearly $200,000 with Duet: Partners in Health & Aging to strengthen support for caregivers in Maricopa County. Duet provides services to people caring for adults with dementia and other health conditions, grandparents raising grandchildren and homebound older adults, with a particular focus on reaching Spanish-speaking families. Its services include peer support groups, educational workshops, legal guidance for kinship families and volunteers who visit older adults at home.

Expanding access for Spanish-speaking families

Hispanic and Latino family caregivers experience a distinct set of challenges. The number of Hispanic and Latino people living with dementia is expected to grow more than any other group in the country.² Family caregivers also encounter barriers to formal care, creating disparities in perception and use of support.¹ In 2025, Duet’s community listening found that many Latino caregivers don’t identify themselves as caregivers, which can keep them from connecting with support.

With support from UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona, Duet established the Cuidando de los Tuyos (Taking Care of Your Loved Ones) outreach program and advisory committee to increase awareness of services and to reframe resources around cultural values. This included partnering with promotores de salud, community health workers embedded in Hispanic communities, to share education about family caregiving and connect family caregivers to Duet’s resources.

Duet also hosted culturally-relevant peer support groups, including 18 Spanish-language support groups to provide family caregivers with critical support and meaningful connection. Since June 2025, nearly 1,000 unique individuals have received support from Duet programs.

Reaching more family caregivers

With support from UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona, Duet grew its services for family caregivers, grandparents raising grandchildren and homebound older adults. The result is more people across Maricopa County with access to culturally relevant services, offered in the language they speak and shaped by their cultural values.
