Investing in spaces for Arizona youth to stay active

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona joined local leaders to celebrate renovated basketball courts at two Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley locations, supporting spaces where kids can stay active and connected.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, the Dreambuilders Foundation and Phoenix Suns player Ryan Dunn to celebrate renovated basketball courts designed to give kids more opportunities to stay healthy and active.

For kids and families, access to places to play and be active is an important part of support health and well-being. About 16% of Arizona kids have at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, ranking the state 48th in the nation and underscoring an important opportunity to encourage active lifestyles.1

Creating more opportunities for healthy activities

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona supported the renovate of basketball courts at two Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley locations: the Jerry Colangelo Branch in Phoenix and the Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch in Glendale. Together, the branches serve more than 1,200 kids in the community.

The investment provides improved spaces where kids can play, stay active and build connections through sports

"We can’t do what we do without the help from great folks like UnitedHealthcare that would invest in kids and want to have a play space that kids can come to every single day. We want to not only empower the kids, but we love kids seeing that there are people that are participating in their success."

Sam Fowler Chief Development Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley

Unveiling the new basketball courts

The renovated court at the Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch was unveiled October 8 with the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona team joining Phoenix Suns player Ryan Dunn and Dr. Health E. Hound for a ribbon-cutting before the children took to the new court.

Dunn joined Club members for basketball activities following the ribbon-cutting. The celebration centered on giving kids a welcoming place to be active, have fun and spend time together. The renovation comes as part of a shared mission to support spaces that encourage kids to be active and engaged.

For the children who rely on Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley every day, the investment is tangible: a refreshed place to play, be active and spend time together. The new courts build on the role the Clubs already play in kids’ lives, creating a welcoming environment for kids each day and for years to come.
