Supporting Missouri school nurses: Building child-centered connections that help students thrive

School nurses are essential links in lifelong health, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Missouri was honored to support that mission at the Missouri Association of School Nurses (MASN) Annual Conference, School Nurses: Essential Links in Lifelong Health, held March 27–29 in Independence, Missouri. As a sponsor of this year’s event, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Missouri joined school health leaders from across the state to share resources, learn together, and strengthen the connections that help students thrive.

Throughout the conference, Missouri health plan leaders connected with school nurses, public health partners, educators, and vendors to discuss what’s working in school health today – and where collaboration can close gaps in care. Attendees also visited the exhibitor table, where conversations ranged from preventive care and immunizations to transportation support and other services that can help families follow through on care plans.

One highlight of the week was the breakout session led by UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Missouri: From Silos to Synergy: Building Child-Centered Care Coordination Across Systems. The session focused on how schools, families, health plans, providers, and community partners can align around the shared goal of helping each student access the care and support they need to be healthy, engaged, and ready to learn.

In the session, attendees explored practical ways to create smoother handoffs, clearer referral paths, and stronger shared accountability across education, healthcare, and community services. The session also highlighted how managed care can support school nurses and the families they serve. Discussions included how school nurses can help identify needs, encourage preventive care, and connect families to plan resources, including support with transportation, help navigating community services, and referrals into care management when a student may benefit from additional coordination.

Looking ahead

UnitedHealthcare’s mission is to help people live healthier lives and help make the health system work better for everyone. Sponsoring and participating in MASN’s annual conference was one way the organization continues showing up for the communities it serves—and for the school nurses who support students every day. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Missouri remains committed to partnering with school nurses across Missouri to strengthen care coordination, remove barriers to care, and help ensure students can access the preventive services and supports they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
